The road to Lachung
From Gangtok the route heads north along the Teesta through Chungthang, with waterfalls and river views along the way. The roads are good in parts and rough in others, especially beyond Chungthang, so sturdy SUVs are the norm. Plan a full day for the drive.
Yumthang, Zero Point & Gurudongmar
From Lachung, an early drive reaches Yumthang Valley (~11,800 ft), the “Valley of Flowers”, famous for spring rhododendrons; Zero Point (~15,300 ft) lies beyond and is often closed by snow. From Lachen, a separate very early drive reaches Gurudongmar Lake (~17,800 ft), one of the world's highest lakes, restricted to Indian nationals.
Altitude and access — take it seriously
- Ascend gradually; skip the highest points if you have heart, lung or blood-pressure issues.
- Snow, landslides and Army/administration decisions can close Zero Point or Gurudongmar at short notice — access is never guaranteed.
- Overnight stays are in local lodges at Lachung/Lachen; connectivity is limited.
Permits
North Sikkim permits are arranged through a registered operator against a confirmed itinerary and a Sikkim-registered vehicle — you can't self-drive here. Carry original ID and passport photos. See our North Sikkim permit page, and remember rules and access change with season.
