The drive is about 95 km but slow and scenic — the road climbs steadily alongside the famous toy-train line, so allow around 3½ hours, a bit more in peak season around Ghoom and Darjeeling town.

Recommended route & major stops

The usual road is Rohini road / Pankhabari via Kurseong and Ghoom. Drivers know the diversions used during roadwork or landslide season and will take the safest open route on the day.

Luggage, family & group notes

A sedan is comfortable for 2–3 people; families with luggage do better in an SUV or Innova on the climbs. Central Darjeeling has pedestrian and limited-vehicle zones near the Mall, so your driver will drop as close as vehicles are allowed.

The Kurseong–Ghoom stretch is narrow and shares the road with the toy train, so it's naturally slow. In the monsoon, allow extra time for the odd landslide diversion.
