Which vehicle for Sikkim's hill roads?

For two people with light luggage a hatchback or sedan is comfortable. Families of four to six almost always prefer an SUV or a Toyota Innova / Innova Crysta on hill roads for the extra space, higher stance and steadier ride. Sikkim's roads are steep and winding, and North Sikkim in particular has rough patches beyond Chungthang. For those high-altitude sections an SUV, Innova or Innova Crysta is the sensible choice. Local sightseeing and short transfers are perfectly comfortable in a sedan.

Do you need a permit for Sikkim?

No permit is needed for Indian nationals to enter general Sikkim or reach Gangtok — just carry an original government photo ID. A Protected Area Permit is required only for restricted zones like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and all of North Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang, Gurudongmar), and is arranged through a registered Sikkim operator.
